New Orleans Saints…Fighting Adversity To Remain Strong

In 1967, the New Orleans Saints became an expansion team in the NFL. Although this team has yet to make it to the Super Bowl, they have shown strength and a will to succeed no matter the obstacle.

It was more than ten years before the Saints finished with a .500 season and more than twenty before they had a winning season. Despite this, they continue to play, attracting fans to games and putting on a great show even when they lose.

2000 saw the Saints to their first playoff victory since the team was formed. They made headlines that year as the seventh team since 1990 to go from a losing season to a division title that year. In 2001, they played in the first game in New York after the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center, losing to the Giants.

In 2005, the New Orleans Saints suffered a brutal attack when Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana, destroying most of New Orleans. Not to be discouraged, the team spent that season playing home games in San Antonio and Baton Rouge, after opening in Giants Stadium.

There was considerable talk and controversy surrounding the possibility of the owner moving the team to another city, citing the possibility that New Orleans was no longer a suitable home for an NFL team because they could make no profits there. Fans were outraged and eventually the decision was made for the Saints to stay in New Orleans and await the renovations necessary to make the Superdome acceptable again.

The Louisiana Superdome went through 185 million dollars worth of renovations that year and, on September 24, 2006, the team was able to go home to their own field. The first game sold out and the team crushed the Falcons with a score of 23-3, earning an ESPY award in 2007 for “Best Moment in Sports.”

Community contributions by the team include several player foundations, many of which are concerned with the health and well being of disadvantaged children. Individual players have also helped with Habitat for Humanity houses, and the Saintsations cheerleaders are involved in the community as well, even making trips to the Middle East to perform for our troops there.

Despite a history of losing seasons and major natural disasters, the New Orleans Saints have not given up. They have some of the most devoted fans around, and a will to keep going no matter what that is seldom matched.
